What Is a QEEG Brain Map? What to Expect at Your First Visit
Nov 05, 2026Imagine being able to see what's happening inside your brain. Not guessing, not wondering why you feel scattered, tired, or on edge, but actually seeing the patterns behind how you feel.
That's what a QEEG brain map offers. It's where every neurofeedback journey begins, and it's often the moment women tell me, "Finally, it makes sense."
If you've been curious about brain mapping but aren't sure what it involves, this article will walk you through it, step by step.
What Is a QEEG?
QEEG stands for quantitative electroencephalogram. That's a big name for a simple idea.
Your brain is always producing tiny electrical signals called brainwaves. An EEG records those signals. A QEEG takes that recording and analyzes it, then compares your brainwave patterns to a large database of other brains.
The result is a set of colorful maps that show how your brain is working: where it's balanced, where it may be working too hard, and where it may be underactive.
What a Brain Map Can Show
A brain map gives us a picture of patterns connected to how you feel and function day to day, such as:
- A brain stuck in fast, alert mode, which often shows up as racing thoughts or trouble sleeping
- Slower activity in areas tied to focus, which can feel like brain fog
- Imbalances between the two sides of the brain that can affect mood and calm
- How well different areas of the brain communicate with each other
A QEEG is not used to diagnose. It's a map of your patterns, and it guides your training so it's designed for your brain, not a one-size-fits-all approach.
What Happens During the Brain Map
Many women are surprised by how simple and comfortable this is.
- A soft cap goes on your head. It holds small sensors that rest gently on your scalp.
- You sit and relax. Recordings are usually taken with your eyes closed and then with your eyes open.
- Your brain does the work. The sensors only listen to your brainwaves. Nothing is sent into your brain, and there's no electricity, no needles, and no pain.
The recording itself usually takes less than an hour, including setup.
How to Prepare
A few simple steps help us get the clearest picture of your brain:
- Wash your hair the night before or the morning of, and skip conditioner, oils, gels, and hairspray
- Get a good night's sleep if you can
- Eat a normal meal beforehand
- Bring a list of your medications and supplements, since some can affect brainwaves
- Don't stop any medication unless your doctor tells you to
Reviewing Your Results
After your brain map is analyzed, we sit down together and go through your results. I'll show you what your maps mean in plain language and how they connect to what you've been experiencing.
This is often an emotional moment. Women who have been told "it's all in your head" or "it's just stress" finally see that something real is happening, and that it can change.
From there, we create a neurofeedback training plan designed specifically for your brain.
Why the Brain Map Matters
Every brain is unique. Two women with the same struggle, like poor sleep or overwhelm, can have completely different brain patterns behind it. A brain map lets us train your brain based on what's actually happening, rather than guessing.
It also gives us a starting point. As your training progresses, we can see how your brain is changing, not just feel it.
Your Brain Is Ready to Change
I've spent 13 years mapping and training brains, and I still find it moving every time a woman sees her own brain for the first time. Understanding is the first step toward transformation.
